Feeding GA Families

52ANDCHANGE MICROMATCHING WILL MATCH ALL DONATIONS DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR, UP TO $500!

PITCH

We began feeding people on the streets of Atlanta in 2010 and our services have grown as we encountered the need. We feed people when they need it, no questions asked. No one should go hungry and we know circumstances can often change quickly. Our services reach people experiencing homelessness, households, children, the elderly, and people who are sick. We provide a weekly food pantry, serve community meals, have groceries delivered to people who cannot leave their homes, while providing dietary options to those who have food restrictions. COVID has only increased the need and we have found innovative ways to provide more, safely. It’s simple: every dollar you give helps us feed more people. Thank you for your support!

WHAT WE DO

We provide free grocery assistance to people in Georgia, in order to reduce food insecurity through an organization of food pantries, feeding programs, food waste reduction and redistribution plans, health and welfare initiatives, and community-focused events. FGF is a resource that the food insecure can utilize during their time(s) of need. Our services are provided with no questions asked, our purpose is to aid those in need, when they are in need, without restrictions based on residency, prior income, or family size.

THE NEED FOR OUR WORK

We're trying to solve/improve three aspects of food assistance for people in need:

  • Access to healthier food options: fresh produce as a weekly staple
  • Providing safe, nutritious food for clients with health or dietary food restrictions: food allergies, diabetes, etc.
  • Making food access available to the homebound, medically at-risk populations, seniors, and clients living in areas not readily served by food assistance resources: home deliveries, mailed/shipped non-perishable food, ordered grocery store pickups or deliveries.

We serve everyone in need regardless of residency or income.

HOW WE KNOW IT WORKS

We can measure our success using a multitude of metrics, shown here.

  • Total number of people served in 2020: 140,889
  • Total number of households served in 2020: 32,412
  • Total number of children served in 2020: 40,819
  • Total number of seniors served in 2020: 19,404

Client choice pantry (non-COVID).

HOW OUR WORK IS INNOVATIVE

  • We specialize in dietary and allergy-friendly foods to ensure that everyone that comes to us for assistance receives food that is safe for them to consume and that won't further harm their health and wellbeing.
  • We provide fresh fruits and vegetables with every emergency food box, to help ensure that clients are receiving proper nutrition during their time of need.
  • We operate a weekly pantry to give consistent assistance to those in need.
  • Throughout COVID, we have pivoted to a drive-thru model to ensure a safe, no-contact weekly food pantry. Clients drive up and their trunks are loaded, keeping our volunteers and clients safer during the pickup. In addition, we expanded our emergency food boxes to include shipped-to-home and grocery-store-to-home options for seniors and the medically at-risk. Grocery orders are delivered or shipped by Amazon, Instacart, and local grocery stores (via Shipt, etc.).

FOUNDING STORY

We come from a long line of people feeding people...my grandmother used to feed people. She was from a small island where they would feed people on the weekends. They would cook, and then they would feed the kids and take them to the beach. When she passed away, we wanted to do something in her honor. In 2010, we started cooking for and feeding the homeless. This led us to starting our own food pantry in Atlanta, and it grew from there. - Alicia Rivera, CFO

OPERATION E.F.F.O.R.T

Emergency Food For Our Communities, Retirees, and Teens includes:

  • Weekly food pantries (drive-through model)
  • Emergency food boxes (mailed/shipped/ordered statewide)
  • Senior meals (home deliveries)
  • Statewide (Georgia) pop-up pantries

WHY 52ANDCHANGE CHOSE  FEEDING GA FAMILIES

We selected and recommend Feeding GA Families as a Cause of the Week because of an impressive combination of virtues:

  • FGF is women-led, minority-led, and veteran-led. It's a relatively young, grassroots organization that has been able to sustain and grow its programs over the past 10 years.
  • FGF meets urgent and profound needs of a large, inclusive population.
  • FGF is using an innovative combination of partnerships to help as many people as they can.
  • When COVID hit, they changed their structure, so they could continue to provide people in need with meals.
  • More funding will clearly help feed people of all ages in need across greater Atlanta, now and into the future.
